Everything you need to know about the ban on engineered stone

From the 1st of July 2024, the Government is implementing a ban on the processing and installation of engineered stone benchtops containing the substance crystalline silica. This means that engineered stone benchtops, panels or slabs cannot be legally manufactured or installed after this date. 

At Simonds, the safety and wellbeing of our valued trades and suppliers has always been, and continues to be, paramount on every home we build. We welcome these changes to the legislation that provide greater protection for stonemasons during the manufacturing and installation process. 

In light of these changes, Caesarstone has introduced a new range of Caesarstone Mineral™ Crystalline Silica-Free surfaces, which provides a like for like alternative made from a new blend of recycled glass, polymer resins and pigments. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Caesarstone Mineral™ crystalline silica-free and the recently banned engineered stone? 

Both products are manufactured in the same way but contain different raw materials. Engineered stone is created by combining and heat curing natural stone materials that contain crystalline silica (such as quartz or stone aggregate) with water, resins and/or pigments. Caesarstone’s Mineral™ blend is made from recycled glass, polymer resins and pigments, and is safer for stonemasons to work with when taking the necessary safety measures.  

Do the new Caesarstone Mineral™ crystalline silica-free surfaces look the same? 

Caesarstone has seamlessly transitioned their most beloved designs to a like for like crystalline silica-free alternative that is closely matched to their original collection. Explore all your favourite Caesarstone products in their new crystalline silica-free range now. In some instances, there may be slight variations in tone and shade, but customers will be receiving a quality and durable surface that has been closely colour matched to the previous Caesarstone collection.

 

Are the Caesarstone Mineral™ crystalline silica-free surfaces durable? 

Yes. Developed by Caesarstone’s industry leading expertise and advanced technology, their crystalline silica-free surfaces deliver high resistance, durability and aesthetics while retaining the same properties of heat, stain and scratch resilience.

Does the regular warranty still apply to the Caesarstone Mineral™ surfaces? 

Each of Caesarstone’s surfaces is carefully inspected to ensure that it meets the highest level of international quality standards and is backed by their professional customer service and support. Is engineered stone that's already installed safe? 

Engineered stone products that have already been installed do not pose an ongoing safety risk to homeowners. Any repairs or removal of engineered stone products installed prior to July 1st, 2024 will be subject to stringent safety protocol and control measures to minimise the generation of dust.
